CA men charged with computer crimes involving child porn

Computer crimes encompass a large number of criminal activities from Internet fraud and fishing schemes to computer sex crimes involving child pornography. While prosecutors take all types of computer and Internet crimes seriously, individuals accused of possessing child pornography often face unique challenges. Californians currently facing child pornography charges may find the following interesting.

According to a news report, a recent Sacramento Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force investigation has resulted in at least one man pleading guilty to child exploitation charges. The ICAC is a federal and state funded task force that is tasked with the job of investigating a variety of crimes related to children in California. Such crimes include child exploitation, child pornography, sex trafficking and more.

According to the United States Attorney Office, a 58-year-old Roseville man pled guilty to possessing more than 3,000 videos and images of child pornography. The man allegedly informed investigators about the content prior to its discovery. According to court documents, the man told investigators about the content during an on-going investigation conducted into the death of the man's granddaughter.

Deciding how to plea in a criminal case involving child pornography charges can be a complicated and emotional decision. In some cases individuals choose to plead guilty to lesser crimes in order to avoid the harsh penalties and stigma associated with a trial.

Penalties for child pornography vary dramatically depending on the facts, including if the defendant produced, possessed, distributed or sold the content. While every case varies, potential defenses to child pornography charges include a lack of knowledge of the content or the involvement of a minor, the emancipation of the minor at the time that the content was produced and the possession of the pornographic material for scientific or educational purpose.
