Federal drug trafficking charges can carry serious penalties

Not everyone accused of a crime is a criminal. In fact, sometimes people get caught up in situations that they never intended to be involved with in the first place. There are many reasons that this can occur. In some cases, it is simply a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In other cases, it is the result of knowing the wrong people. In either case, prosecutors need more than association to convict.

Six people were recently arrested on federal drug trafficking charges in a case that stems from California to Idaho. One of those arrested is a 42-year-old Oakland, California man. The suspects have been accused of conspiring to distribute large quantities of methamphetamines. The charges are the result of a federal investigation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration in conjuction with the Treasure Valley Metro Violent Crimes Task Force.

According to federal authorities, a Boise, Idaho, grand jury has already indicted eleven individuals, which includes the six recently arrested, with federal drug trafficking charges including conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine. If the defendants are convicted of the charges against them, they could face a prison sentence between ten years and life in prison and a maximum $10 million fine.

Federal drug crimes including drug trafficking or drug importation are some of the most serious offenses that an individual can face in the United States. Sentencing for drug crimes is often harsh, including large fines and lengthy prison sentences. Due to the possible penalties, it is imperative that individuals accused of federal drug offenses seek the advice of a federal defense attorney before speaking with prosecutors.
