Individuals accused of state or federal drug trafficking charges face a long, uphill battle and stiff penalties. Furthermore, both state and federal law enforcement agencies aggressively target drug crimes. And, while penalties for drug trafficking charges can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as the quantity and type of substance involved, individuals convicted of drug trafficking charges generally face long sentences.

It was recently reported that four men were arrested in San Bernardino for drug trafficking. The four men are said to be members of La Familia Michoacana. According to the California Department of Justice, the group is involved in a large-scale, criminal enterprise that distributes drugs across the state. State agents claim they seized more than 100 pounds of methamphetamine and approximately nine pounds of cocaine.

The four men were reportedly arrested following a month-long investigation conducted by the department and other members of a special task force. During the investigation undercover agents bought 10 pounds of methamphetamine. Agents then served a search warrant at a home connected with the men and seized another 97.5 pounds of methamphetamine, 9.5 pounds of cocaine and $27,500 in cash.

While individuals accused of serious drug crimes can face either state or federal prosecution, it is generally federal prosecutors that deal with interstate drug crimes. Nevertheless, whether a person is accused of a state or federal drug offense, it is imperative that they hire an experienced and qualified criminal defense attorney at once. It may be the difference between a lifetime behind bars and a real chance at freedom.
