A California city official was booked on an embezzlement charge on Dec. 7 and then released the following day. The 47-year-old man is the deputy treasurer in Compton, and he has held the position for nearly 23 years. The man is scheduled for an arraignment in Compton Superior Court on Dec. 30.

Compton deputies took the defendant into custody at about 2:50 p.m. The man is accused of embezzling funds from the city treasury. Shortly after the incident, the mayor of Compton issued a statement about the allegations. Mayor Aja Brown said that city officials had learned about potential misconduct and notified law enforcement about it. She said that the extent of the potential misconduct is not yet known. She also explained that the City Council would be reviewing the internal financial controls in the city as well as its hiring practices.

Investigations into white collar crimes like embezzlement generally take longer than investigations into other kinds of theft. The investigations may be complex because the activities in question may have been conducted through computer systems. In some cases, an investigation into alleged embezzlement does not result in charges being filed.

People may want to contact a criminal defense attorney as soon as they become aware that they are under investigation for embezzlement. Even before criminal charges are filed, an individual who is being accused of embezzlement may need legal representation. An attorney may help an individual by handling all communications with investigators and working on a defense strategy in case it is needed.
